Oroku is a grey tanuki with black hair pinned neatly, and a red kimono. In human form, she looks almost exactly the same, but has the appearance of a middle-aged woman.
She is peacekeeper of tanuki of Tama Hills. She is rational and wise, and very strong-willed. All the tanukis respect her and call her "grandma".
